Advanced Community Rotation Resource Site
Advanced Community Practice Rotation
This site was created to provide ideas for student projects and activities for their Advanced Community Pharmacy Practice Rotations. At Wingate University School of Pharmacy these rotations take place during the 4th professional year and are 5 weeks in duration. Each student is required to complete at least 2 Advanced Community Practice rotations in their 4th professional year. Some students may opt to complete both of their Advanced Community Rotations back to back in a 10 week block at one pharmacy.
2/1/2008: NC Pharmacists may now administer the varicella zoster vaccine! The new regulations went into effect on 2/1/2008 that allow pharmacists to administer the varicella zoster vaccine in addition to influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. A copy of the amended rule may be accessed online at: http://www.ncbop.org/LawsRules/rules.2507.pdf . The rules regarding varicella zoster vaccine require that you get approval by the patient's physician before administering the vaccine. Please email me (sspencer@wingate.edu) if you would like a sample immunization protocol. The next opportunity to get your immunization certificate via NCAP and the APhA immunization certificate program is on April 12th in Chapel Hill, NC. The certificate program is incorporated into the curriculum at Wingate University (as well as UNC & Campbell), so all of your 4th year pharmacy students in NC are able to immunize as long as they are supervised by an immunizing pharmacist.
DRUG INFORMATION SERVICE RESUMES JUNE 1ST 1008: As a part of the Wingate University Family, all of our community pharmacy based preceptors may now access our on-campus drug information center. You may use this service when researching drug information questions from patients, physicians, or other providers. Dr. Terri Wensel is our Drug Information Specialist, and she will be providing timely answers to your drug information questions. PRECEPTOR TRAINING MATERIALS: APhA and NACDS very recently created a free continuing education program: "The Community Pharmacist Preceptor Education Program". This program is designed to help community pharmacy based preceptors to evaluate their rotation sites and to refine their precepting skills. The program would be useful for both new and experienced preceptors, and it provides 3 credit hours of CE. To download a copy of the program, go to http://www.pharmacist.com/pdf/PP_Monograph.FINAL_070607.pdf .
